Further nonsense American schools teach is civilian oversight of the military. WE are rabid believers in civilian oversight. The problem is civilians aren't overseeing the military. Military might is primarily dictated by criminals. Democratically elected criminals.

This thought has be percolating for decades. Military folk have approached me, and I them, to silently share our thoughts. A military with no oversight? Generals who, when told to napalm women and children have not just the legal right, rather the legal obligation to say no? OMG! That'd be anarchy!

How will that work? Sincerely, and with the utmost best wishes for your welfare, I don't know. Nor do I care. I do know there are some courageous and brilliant commanders. They have, since well before democracy, been railroaded into action which they knew was wrong. Would real civilian oversight involve a council of citizens, not elected? Some randomly selected, some recommended. Maybe. Maybe not. Whatever is tried, the trying will have just begun.

When my dad Brad and I would argue politics in my early 20s, I would often point out how American traditions were hypocritical or counterproductive. He would often say

Yes, butt it's the best system there is.

We were dumbfounded. One of the reasons WE've always thought mums was sharper than pops was she had the good sense to leave.
